With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we’re expecting to see a few sparkly new rings in our feeds this week! Here at our Dallas wedding venue, we’ve been noticing a swoon-worthy trend in engagement jewelry: colorful gemstones. Though diamonds are still the traditional choice, other gems are gaining popularity among our brides… and it’s easy to see why!

Colorful gemstones add a lot of personality to your ring. Whether you select a square cut emerald or oval sapphire (a la Princess Kate), a colorful gemstone makes a distinctive (and stunning!) statement.

Did you know colorful gemstones used to be the norm for engagement jewelry? During the time of Queen Victoria, most engagement rings featured a colorful stone with detailed engraving—including symbols of eternity like hearts, bows, and even snakes! However, in the late Victorian era, massive diamond mines were discovered in South Africa. These easily accessible gems were then popularized for engagements as marketing stunt by De Beers.

Colorful engagement rings – especially emeralds and rubies – made a comeback in the Art Deco era, paired with geometric settings. Fashion icons like Princess Diana (and now Kate Middleton, wearing the same beautiful jewel) also inspired an enthusiasm for sapphires.

Today, colorful gemstones are one more opportunity for personalization. Like unique wedding celebrations, engagement ring designs have becoming increasingly distinctive, tailored to suit the style of every individual couple. We love to see all the stunning designs representing your love stories!

So would a colorful gemstone be right for you? Or are traditional diamonds the better choice to suit your personality? This is what we love most about engagement rings; it’s never a “one size fits all” approach. Each bride-to-be’s engagement ring is representative of her unique love story.

Love is always in the air this time of year; we can’t wait to admire all the newly gifted engagement rings and meet all our future couples. Once you’ve had time to celebrate, we hope you’ll put The White Sparrow at the top of your venue list! Our whitewashed walls and open-concept allow any creative vision to come to life within our Dallas wedding venue. We’d love to show you around—contact us to schedule a tour.
